John Williams
American · 1922–1994
John Edward Williams was an American novelist and professor who spent most of his career at the University of Denver. He published four novels across strikingly different genres — the western Butcher's Crossing (1960), the quiet domestic novel Stoner (1965), and the epistolary Roman narrative Augustus (1972), which won the National Book Award. Despite consistent critical admiration, Williams remained largely unknown during his lifetime. The belated worldwide success of Stoner — particularly in Europe after 2000 — came after his death.
