Philip Roth

Philip Roth was an American novelist whose work centred on American Jewish identity, sex, ageing, and the porous boundary between author and protagonist. His breakthrough came with Portnoy's Complaint (1969), and he won the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral (1997). His Zuckerman novels and the metafictional Operation Shylock (1993) pioneered the use of an author-insert character that later writers — including Jonathan Safran Foer — would borrow. He retired from writing in 2012 and is regarded as one of the major American novelists of the postwar period.
