Taking Children Seriously
A philosophy of child-rearing developed by David Deutsch and Sarah Fitz-Claridge, arguing that children are rational agents whose autonomy deserves the same respect as adults'. It rejects coercion — including conventional discipline and compulsory schooling — in favour of collaborative problem-solving between parents and children. Rooted in Popperian epistemology and the idea that children are universal explainers, it holds that they learn best when free to pursue their own interests without being forced. Aaron Stupple's The Sovereign Child is the most accessible contemporary statement of the view.
