Ted Chiang

American · b. 1967

Ted Chiang is an American science fiction writer whose short stories are celebrated for combining rigorous philosophical and scientific ideas with emotional precision and literary craft. Working slowly and producing relatively few stories, he has won more Hugo and Nebula awards per story than almost any other writer in the genre. His collections Stories of Your Life and Others (2002) — whose title story became the film Arrival — and Exhalation (2019) collect work that often turns on a single rigorously developed thought experiment. Often compared to Borges, Chiang occupies a rare position at the intersection of hard science fiction and genuine literary ambition — making the conceptual feel soulful rather than sterile.
