Stories of Your Life and Others
By Ted Chiang
2002
Science fiction
Ted Chiang's debut collection, gathering eight speculative short stories written between 1990 and 2001. The volume includes 'Understand', a 1991 novelette about a man whose experimental brain treatment ratchets him into ever-higher levels of intelligence, and the title novella 'Story of Your Life', later adapted as the film *Arrival*. Chiang's stories work as carefully reasoned thought experiments — each premise pushed to its limit through philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, or theology — and the collection is widely credited with anticipating ideas later central to the AI doom debate, including the intelligence explosion and the orthogonality thesis.
