Walker Percy

American · 1916–1990

American Southern novelist and essayist, trained as a physician before tuberculosis derailed his medical career and turned him to writing. A devout Catholic convert, Percy explored themes of alienation, malaise, and the search for meaning in postwar consumer society, heavily influenced by Kierkegaard and the European existentialists. His debut novel The Moviegoer (1961) won the National Book Award; later works include The Last Gentleman, Love in the Ruins, and the philosophical essay collection Lost in the Cosmos.
