He became a global culture-war figure from 2016 onward via his stance on compelled speech and the bestseller 12 Rules for Life, then a near-fatal benzodiazepine dependency and treatment in Russia. His Dostoevsky-shaped reading of life — clean your room, take responsibility, beware the seductive utopian — sits behind a lot of contemporary "trad" thinking.
