Emily Wilson
British · b. 1971
British classicist and professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, best known for her translations of Homer. Her 2017 translation of the Odyssey was the first English-language Odyssey by a woman, and was followed by a translation of the Iliad in 2023. Wilson's versions are written in iambic pentameter, kept strictly line-for-line with the Greek, and aim for plain, contemporary diction in place of the more grandiose register favoured by earlier translators — a choice that drew both fervent praise and a sharp anti-woke backlash.
