Infohazards

Information whose mere existence or dissemination causes harm — knowledge that, once let out, cannot be put back. The term was coined by Nick Bostrom but the underlying intuition is ancient, often framed as "forbidden knowledge" or Promethean hubris. Modern examples include nuclear weapons designs, gain-of-function virology research, and AI capabilities work. Frankenstein is among the first literary treatments of the idea: Victor's pursuit of the secret of life is portrayed as an infohazard whose damage he cannot undo.
