Raymond Carver

American · 1938–1988

American short story writer and poet, often associated with literary minimalism and the so-called "dirty realism" of the 1980s. Carver's spare, declarative prose chronicles working-class Americans in moments of quiet emotional crisis. His best-known collections are Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, and Cathedral, the last of which marked a shift towards a slightly warmer, more expansive style. He died of lung cancer at fifty.
