Philip K. Dick

American science fiction writer whose paranoid, philosophically charged novels probed the unreliability of perception, identity, and reality itself. Prolific to the point of mania — he wrote much of his best work on amphetamines — Dick produced 44 novels and 121 short stories in his lifetime, among them Ubik, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (filmed as Blade Runner), The Man in the High Castle, A Scanner Darkly, and We Can Remember It for You Wholesale (filmed as Total Recall). In 1974 he experienced a series of visions he interpreted as a Gnostic theophany, and spent the last eight years of his life writing a million-word journal, the Exegesis, attempting to make sense of them.
