George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of the leading English novelists of the Victorian era. Adopting a male pseudonym to ensure her work was taken seriously, she became celebrated for the psychological depth, moral seriousness, and broad social canvas of her fiction. Her major novels include Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and Middlemarch, the last of which is frequently ranked among the greatest novels in the English language. Before turning to fiction she was a formidable critic, essayist, and translator, and her unconventional life — including a long partnership with the married George Henry Lewes — was as much remarked upon as her work.
