Susanna Clarke
English ยท b. 1959
English novelist best known for her debut Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2004), an alternative-history fantasy of nineteenth-century English magic, and Piranesi (2020), a slim metaphysical thriller set in an infinite labyrinthine house. Her work blends scholarly footnoted realism with fairy-tale and occultist motifs. Long delays between books are partly the result of a chronic-fatigue illness that has shaped her output since the mid-2000s.
