Philosopher, economist and revolutionary whose historical materialism turned Hegel's dialectic toward the material conditions of production, arguing that class struggle drives history and that capitalism generates the proletariat who will inevitably overthrow it. The Communist Manifesto (1848, with Engels) and Das Kapital (1867) between them shaped more of the twentieth century than any other body of theory.
